Free First Road is a Catan speed variant designed to reduce opening congestion and boost early momentum. It is frequently recommended for larger or mixed-skill tables that want faster board development and fewer stalled starts after initial placements.
How to Play It
After normal Catan setup (two settlements and two roads per player), each player places one additional free road connected to their network, in player order. This extra road does not count toward Longest Road until the player has taken at least one full turn. The result is quicker expansion without rewriting core scoring rules.
